Eritrea Calls Ethiopia’s New Stance a ‘Declaration of War’

Eritreans to take "All measures necessary" to defend their motherland

By William Davison

Eritrea criticized Ethiopia’s new stance on relations between the two countries as “pure aggression and a declaration of war” and denied it supports terrorism.

Ethiopia’s government on April 15 announced it will increase support to Eritrean rebels seeking to overthrow the government of President Isaias Afewerki. The country will use “any means at its disposal” to bring about  regime change unless the Eritrean government changes its policies, the  Ethiopian Foreign Ministry said.

The two countries fought a 1998-2000 border war that killed 70,000 people, according to Brussels-based International Crisis Group. Relations between the two have remained tense as each backed opposing factions in nearby Somalia’s civil war.

Skirmishes between Ethiopian and Eritrean troops occasionally break out
along their 912-kilometer (567-mile) border. Ethiopia previously accused
Eritrea of supporting Ethiopian rebels and al-Qaeda-linked insurgents in
neighboring Somalia.

“Eritrea does not have an agenda of destabilizing Ethiopia or the region,”
Girma Asmerom, Eritrea’s ambassador to the African Union, said to the
53-member continental bloc’s security panel on April 26.

Accusations of Eritrean support for terrorism are “fabricated and baseless,”
he said.

It is not in our psyche, our culture, our philosophy, our upbringing, our value and our history to attack civilian targets, victimize and terrorize innocent people.”

Bombing Attempt

In February, Ethiopia said it foiled an attempt by the rebel Oromo
Liberation Front to bomb an AU summit in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital. Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of backing the front.

Eritrea’s “destabilization activities against other countries in the region,
including Ethiopia, continue unabated,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Eritrea has been under United Nations sanctions since December 2009 for its alleged support of terrorists (rebels) fighting to topple the Western-backed government of Somalia. Eritrea’s Foreign Ministry says the sanctions are “unjustifiable.”

The international community should condemn the aggression by the Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s government and call for its withdrawal from Eritrean territory, Girma said.

Isaias and Meles led allied rebel groups that overthrew Ethiopia’s Communist Derg regime in 1991. Eritrea, formerly an Ethiopian province, won independence after a 1993 referendum. A 2002 decision by a United Nations commission that the disputed town of Badme is Eritrean has been rejected by Ethiopia.

“Eritrea is ready to normalize relations with Ethiopia” if Ethiopia vacates its territory, Girma said.

  1. Dear Readers,

It is really sad when people choose wrong directions.Who looses when children of one family fight. The whole family looses. The Ethopian and Eritrean people have lost many opportunities by the wrong choices. If President Esays had allowed all Eritreans to participate in their affaires, if he had thanked Yemen,Sudan, Ethiopian Democrats for their support for the Eritrean People strugge and especially if he had thanked the Tigrean people and its Vanguard Front the TPLF and also if he had opened Assab with out much pressure to the Ethiopians at large , History would have remembered Ato Esays like Abraham Lincon of the USA.

But, unfortunately he missed these golden opportunities. Ato Esayas basically a Tigrean should have gone to far to hurt his people.People were expecting that Eritreans and Ethiopians will prosper together. The problem is not in being two countries or one country. The issue is how to work peacefully and cooperatively.Otherwise, the issue of one State or two States is the problem of people with ruling mentality or people who are more concerned with the size of the coutnry but not concerned at all with the quality of life of citizens.

Please Dear Ato Esays, stop all these wrong thinking ,you are harming your own people one both sides of the Mereb River and try your best to compensate them hugely while you are alive. Please stop making Mereb River desitnation of soldirers but instead a Dam where the people on both sides can drink clean water ,get cheap quality fruits and even some electricity. Please pray God to help you swallow this simple truth.Simply, Say Sorry and ask the Eritrean elederly how to go forward .They will advice you. When TPLF and EPLF made some good agreements, Eritrean elederly said this will bring result unlike the many agreements of EPLF and ELF.This shows the Eritrean elderly know 100 % the solutions. The mistake is you are not listening to them.

Instead you are talking with young officers who think the Tigreans are enemies of Eritrea. It is shame , they do not even know who is leading Eritea.God bless the Eritrean and Ethiopian People. We all hope Mereb to be open soon and both people move only with their National Identity Card. Please Ato Esays make another history. You made history when you established EPLF and led it to Victory. Now , you have to come to ADI Fitaw and build a residence for your retirement.Of course, this can happen only if you sincerely say sorry to the people on both sides of Mereb.

  2. Dear Brothers at Tesfa news,
I hope you will post my comment. It is not intended to praise or criticize any body. I am sure this is the view of the common Ethiopian and Eritrean who has not used the internet and may not even experience it in his life. I am sure the advices posted help different stakeholders of the issue in discussion.
    Thank you.
