A political advisor to Eritrea’s President Isaias Afewerki says Asmara has implemented measures to ensure that citizens are unharmed by the effects of drought and famine in the Horn of Africa region. Yemane Ghebreab denied reports that a food crisis is forcing Eritreans to flee to neighboring countries.

There [are] no food shortages in Eritrea at the present time. Last year, we had a bumper harvest. We have also built up our reserves in terms of food stocks by importing food, so we will be ready for any emergency” said Ghebreab. Continue reading

Chalice 60%, Eritrea 40% Share agreed

Chalice Gold Mines Limited (ASX:CHN; TSX:CXN) is pleased to announce that, further to the announcement of 16 June 2011 in which it advised that it had reached agreement with the Eritrean National Mining Corporation (“ENAMCO”) for ENAMCO’s acquisition of a 30% participating interest in Chalice’s Zara Gold Project in Eritrea, East Africa, Chalice and ENAMCO have now executed a Shareholders’ Agreement to incorporate and regulate their relationship and obligations within Zara Mining Share Company (“Zara Mining SC”) which will be the entity which is to own and operate the Koka Gold Mine and explore the surrounding Zara Licences.

Muslim Kenyans Fund and Recruit Al-Shabaab: UN Report

Somalia’s al Qaeda-linked rebels have extensive funding, recruiting and training networks within Kenya, and have also established connections with jihadist groups across the continent, according to a UN report. A UN Monitoring Group report on Somalia and Eritrea obtained by Reuters said non-Somali Kenyan nationals now constitute the largest and most organised non-Somali entity within the al Shabaab group.

Al Shabaab has been waging an insurgency against the UN-backed government in Somalia since 2007. It controls large parts of southern and central Somalia, as well as chunks of the capital, Mogadishu.

In the past, al Shabaab’s presence in Kenya has been concentrated primarily within the ethnic Somali community. But since 2009, the Group has rapidly expanded its influence and membership to non-Somali Kenyan nationals,” the report said. Continue reading
