At UN, Eritrea Gets “Bashed” Despite Badme Land Claim, Sanctions Threatened

Eritrea's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Araya Desta

By Matthew Russell Lee (Inner City Press),

Last month, Eritrea asked the UN Security Council to meet with it, and on Tuesday the meeting was granted. Also present, however, were representatives from Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and Uganda, who “attacked Eritrea” as one Permanent Representative leaving the meeting told Inner City Press.

The Council wanted the meeting to be closed to the press and the public, but cannot invite non Council members into its consultations. So it was called an interactive dialogue and was held not in the Council chambers but on the second floor of the UN’s temporary North Lawn building.

Chinese Deputy Permanent Representative Wang shook his head and told Inner City Press “he did not think the Council could solve this problem.”

In the middle of the meeting, French Ambassador Gerard Araud, emerged to buy a pastry and stood eating it while studying a three dimensional carving of the 1269 B.C. treaty of Hattusilis and Ramses II, given to the UN by Turkey in 1970. Next to him was a stone carving given to the UN by Syria, a topic he’s said to have raised in the Council’s consultations on July 18.

Passing to reporters, Ambassador Araud hissed about the meeting as saying, “They are not kissing to each other.”

Another Permanent Representative bemoaned the format that developed for the meeting, saying that further “Eritrea bashing is not productive.”

Another added, of Eritrea, “they are isolated in their neighborhood, their neighbors do not like their foreign policy including in Somalia.”

Inside the meeting, Eritrea was emphasizing that while it had won a court decision on Badme and other land belongs to it and not Ethiopia, the decision has not been implemented. One Council member said that additional sanctions may be imposed on Eritrea.

This seems like a spiral: where will it end? (Source)

  2. What’s the point of the meeting ? Eritrea is likely to be punished further so is this to little to late before further punishment.

  3. Hey i was just wondering why don’t they leave the country alone, to be honest not the Government of Eritrea is the problem but the UN Nation is, they are just trying to make it look like the Eritrean Government is bad and accusing them of wrong things without prove anyways im just trying to say the world has problems and if they really carry about people and the Nation of Eritrea or any other country in the world they shouldn’t threatnened or give any Sanctions as they punishing the people and not the Government and besides Eritrea has seen worst than that and trust me if the UN and the US are trying to make the Government leave which everyone knows, they wont get away with it as the people of Eritrea stands behind the government and the situation.

The threats and saction will lead to nowhere.

  4. If the UN was seriouse and trustworthy they would tell Ethiopia withdraw from Badme which according to the court decision belongs to Eritrea. Why did this not happen? Once the step is taken, there are less to disagree about between Eritrea and Ethiopia and Isias has not longer legitimacy to stay on power as he will have no support from the people. The peace between Eritrea and Ethiopia is essential in order to maintain peace in the rigion. Eritrea is a key role player with regard to Somalia as Eritrea has credibility in the eye of the Somalis. So do not brutalize the whole East Africa by witch hunting. The fact is that Somalia has been i chaos for the last 20 years! And that is without any involvement of the Eritrea. In contrary Ethiopia is and has been in constant war against Somalia.
So, Eritrea can help with the Somali situation and to maintain peace in the Sudanese part as well. Therefor it is for the advantage of Ethiopia to make peace with Eritrea. What is happening right now is just like trouble maker kids beating up one guy they don’t like. This is irresponsible with regard to the people of the whole rigion. Make Ethiopia withdraw from Badme and you will see miracles in no time. Thank you.

  5. “The people of Eritrea will stand behind the government” really??? I do not think so.The people of Eritrea have had enough of this lawless rulers in Asmara. The people of Eritrea is a peace-loving and hard working people,It will not support the lawless, unconstitutional government in Asmara. The Ruling party in Eritrea, the PFDJ is a treat first to the Eritrean people.

  6. The whole thing has nothing to do with the governments action against anybody, rather, it is about Eritrea’s obedience to the powers and the puppet governments in Africa are using it to gain their bread for the day. It is no one’s business how we work with our government and yes the Eritrean people remain in support of their hard working government, because it is the Hizbawi Ghinbar government which means Liberation and Freedom. Despite of all of these cheap talks from every corner Eritrea will prevail – the TRUTH is on its side. It is all a matter of time and patience. God bless this nation of ours. Awet N’hafash!!!

  7. Wake up Kibreab, Hizbawi ginbar has gone long time ago, higdef is leading the country , which are a bunch of riffraff.

  8. you have no clue of what u r talking about. didn’t you watch the reaction from Eritreans to the unjust and illegal sanction imposed on Eritrea by the so called UNSC in collaborations with some puppet gov’ts in Africa. you need to wake up from whatever comma you are in to.

  10. the probelem is not the governement of eritrea isteade the us and the ethiopian are the big probleam in eastafrica and the peaple of eritrea loves their government .

  11. thats why eritrea will still contuninig its way with out any probleam istead the ethiopians can not resist the way of leaving in thier country becouse thinges became expencive in thier country and the us is tired to help them so they r looking to bring to eritrea to dialoge with ethiopia to resolve their probleam befor demarcation occured between the two coutries .and this shows that they care about ethiopias but they didn’t care about the pepele of eritrea . and the people of eritrea they dont have a choice they have to suport their government since he is defending our country even the government of eritrea is ready to withdraw the constitution if this probleam is resolved .

  12. You have no idea what this means tonall Eritreans. If you are Eritrean and you think that you will have an easier life after sanction, you are day dreaming. I hate what the Eritrean government does to it’s own people but I am not going to support a sanction that will compromise Eritrean sovereignty and rights as Eritrean.nTrust me, if the additional sanction is imposed on Eritrea, the first victims are poor Eritreans. any Eritrean, leaving abroad , having also another citizenship passport will have a nightmare traveling from A to B .It won’t matter whether the Eritrean origin traveler is opposition camp or government supporter. if you are Eritrean, you are campaigning against yourself regardless of the camp you belong to ( opposition or gov. Supporter). I have no doubt about it.
