The Number of Medical Doctors in Eritrea on the Rise

With in 7 years time, Eritrea trained nearly 100 medical doctors and specialists

By TesfaNews,

Eritrea has shown tremendous progress in producing a number of competent medical doctors and specialists from its two medical schools based on its own capacity.

The Orotta School of Medicine and Dentistry which was established inside the national referral hospital, Orotta, was first opened in 2004 with only 32 students by offering an eight-year course program in Medicine and a seven-year course program in Dentistry.

The Orotta national referral hospital is one giant hospital comprising of five big hospitals including a 200 bed surgical hospital, Berhan Ayni (optical hospital), Kidistti Mariam Psychiatric hospital, a 300 bed Pediatric hospital and Mekane Hiwot Maternity hospital.

After giving special emphasis to the task of providing higher specialization courses in various health fields beyond training medical doctors, later in 2008, the school opened its post-graduate medical program offering courses in areas of Pediatrics, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Preliminary preparations have also been made to begin postgraduate training programs in the fields of Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, Orthopedics, Neuropsychiatry, Pathology, Ophthalmology and Emergency Medicine among others with the ultimate goal of producing up to 15 surgeons every year.

Within this short period of time, the school has achieved to graduate a total of 65 newly trained medical doctors, 6 general Surgeons, 12 Pediatrician specialists and 5 Gynecology and Obstetrics specialists. Currently, the school enrolls more than 400 students.

The capabilities of the students who have been trained in different areas of medical education have been approved by experts from the United Kingdom, the United States, some from the Middle East and other countries in Africa.

Recently, Dr. Lisa Masterson, an American doctor and co-host of the popular TV series “The Doctors”, louds the growing number of newly trained health professionals, their competitiveness, and the leading role they are expected to play in reducing mother and child mortality rate in the country.

This impressive achievement is indeed a promise for more to come. With such achievements, the Eritrean society will therefore definitely get good health care services at ease for the number of health graduates would redouble in many folds in the near future.

The number of health care specialists trained since the launching of Orotta Medical School in 2004 has been evermore increasing

  1. From what I understand these days, Eritrea has a dedicated leadership and a very understanding people.

I am hoping the government improves his bad record of human right issues then to become the best example for the rest ¬of the countries on the continent. Because, planning and execution are the ¬most many African countries lack may be because of corruption and vision.

  2. This excellent news as it will further improve the health situation of the people of Eritrea. Eritrea is already among those few countries in Africa ¬which is set to reduce the Child and Infant Mortality Rate (CIMR) to a ¬level of the Millennium Goal. According to UN Inter-agency report, the CIMR of Eritrea in 2010 has already reached 61/000 while the rate for Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya was as high as 106/000, 103/000 and 85/000 respectively.

  3. The majority of Eritrean population or the Moslims to be more specific were marginalized by the occupires
or colonizing powers and to day the Eritrean Moslims are being marginalized by theire own government
all these graduating students are from the higlanders "christians".
So where is the justice ? pls try to fix this and try to narrow the gap otherewise the exiting calm is the calm before the storm !!!!!

  4. Fetaw Hageru:

I am hoping you love your country like we do and I believe that is why you picked that nick name. From the way of your writing, it seems to me you are a frequent reader of Awate.com, an extremists affiliated website that has long been abandoned by Eritreans. That's where you learnt about 'highlanders' and 'lowlanders' or 'Christian occupiers' and 'Muslim'.

In any case, welcome to TesfaNews where you can express your opinion freely with out censorship. Besides, it is a place where one gets all kinds of positive and progressing news about Eritrea.

One thing you should know that education is not something that you can reward someone according to his/her religious affiliation. It's something that you need to earn it. For that many Eritreans (Muslim or Christian) are benefiting from it. So keep your little, outdated propaganda to yourself and stay focus on something positive. How about that?

  5. my dear brother I assure you I love my country and all eritreans with out any discrimination.
even the eritrean government I do admire all the hard work but if I see some wrong doings knowingly
or with out shouldn't I say some thing about them ?and if i creticise the government do I become un Eritrean ? this is the only thing which makes me diffrent from those who write only -ve or+ve things
about the eritrean government but pls don't catagorise me!
I congratulate you to all the goods NEWS that I read in tesfa news good work keep it up my dear brother !!!!

  6. You are most welcome brother.

These days, we are witnessing two types of Eritreans: Those who get annoyed and bothered much every time they heard positive thing about Eritrea; and those who rejoice and seek for more of the same development and progressive news.

I want you to remain with the later group at times of good or bad. But talking divisive languages like highlanders, lowlanders, Christians or Muslims will automatically put you with the first group that Eritreans already called them – Enemy!

  7. IF PRESIDENT ISAIAS DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS, WILL YOU TOLERATE IT? YOU’LL BE THE FIRST TO SIGN A PETITION CALLING NATO INTERVENTION OR DEATH BY SKINNING HIM ALIVE. WHY? BECUASE YOU FAILED TO NOTICE THE GOLD IN YOUR HAND UNTIL YOU LOST IT. BUT IN OTHER FELLOW AFRICAN COUNTRIES, IT IS BUSINESS AS USUAL.

Museveni says key file on ‘dubious payment’ is lost
    Saturday, 10 March 2012

President Museveni has lost a key file containing information on the loss of Ush 40 billion paid to a French firm in another compensation scandal. The President told Uganda Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee on Thursday that the missing file contains details of an official who advised him on the payment of $14.6m to Dura Cement Ltd.

“The President told us he was advised that $14.6m to Dura cement Ltd was a fair amount,” a source said. “He expressed shock at how government came to pay $16m yet the ideal amount would have been $500,000.”

However, according to sources, the committee members wondered why the President agreed that $14.5m should be paid to the company yet the ideal amount was only $500,000.

The UPDF trading arm, National Enterprises Corporation (NEC), signed a mining contract with Dura Cement Limited in 2006, which President Museveni later ordered cancelled through instructions to former Energy Minister Daudi Migereko.Dura sued government for loss of business after their contract was given to Hima Cement. The company first demanded $103m but after negotiations, the company whose directors and address are not known, was paid more than $16m.

  11. Derar tesfa news
I promise you that I will remain with all Eritreans in bad and good times but pls do the same
the reason I am saying this is nothing more important than the lifes of young eritreans to be cut short in the deserts of Sainai egypt and yet not a single line from you nor from the Eritrean government so pls lets do some thing about it even if we can open an international account
and if each and every ERITREAN puts $1.0 the agony of these eritreans I don't mean to reward the badwine criminals but if our government is not willing to talk about it then the sudanese and egyptian gov. will not do any thing about it so pls pls lets save the young lives!!!
