Eritrea’s cycling superstar and Africa’s current championship Natnael Rerhane won overall the 2012 Tour D’Algerie by standing first in the general classification of the race that took place in Algeria from 10 – 16 March.
The 2012 cycling tour of Algeria, as part of the UCI Africa Tour with a 2.2 class, has attracted around 123 cyclists representing 15 countries and 18 foreign teams.
Of the five stages in this year’s edition of the Tour, Natnael Berhane won the third stage (167km) at 4h 11 ’34’ and also finished 3rd at the fourth stage along with a yellow jersey.
His team mate, Tefsom Okubamariam Issak, also won the following fourth stage of the tour clocking 3h 27 ’28′ that run between the city center of Oran and Mount Santa Cruz, over a distance of 138km.
The fourth stage was reportedly the most difficult one since the runners have to come a very hilly route, characterized by several ribs. However, it ended up with Tesfom’s victory followed by a yellow jersey win for Natnael Berhane both from team Eritrea.
“I am very happy, since I’m the new yellow jersey winner after this fourth step, and my teammate grabbed the top spot in the race, which is wonderful for Eritrea,” said Natnael after the fourth stage.
After a frustrating but crucial defeat at the fourth stage, the Algerian Hicham Shaaban, Sovac team, has been heard saying, “It was the last chance for our team, this is why we have set a goal before the start of the race [fourth stage] to snatch the first place, but unfortunately I have not been able since the Eritrean was too strong, especially in the final sprint.”
The win sealed victory for Eritrea for the second time in two years.
Natnael was remembered to won the first stage of last year’s edition of the Tour D’Algerie and finished as third in the overall individual classification.
