Al-Qaida offshoot in Libya hopes to turn Africa’s Sahel region into a ‘new Somalia’

Libya seems well on its way to becoming the next Somalia, with much of the country already ruled by tribal/clan based armed militias. As was the case in Somalia, Libya is in the process of separation, with the eastern, oil rich, Cyrenica region having issued a de facto declaration of independence.

Tripoli, the capital of Libya, seems to be headed in the direction of where Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia was 20 years ago, with various well armed militias from outside the city taking up residence and clashing over territory and the spoils of power.  Continue reading

The African Union has recognized Libya’s National Transitional Council as the official representative of the Libyan people, dealing another blow to embattled leader Moammar Gadhafi.

The 54-member bloc said Tuesday it is ready to support the NTC as it works to form an inclusive government.

Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, who holds the AU’s rotating chair, said the bloc supports the Libyan people as they build a “united, democratic, peaceful and prosperous Libya.” Continue reading

Ethiopia on Wednesday recognized Libya’s rebel National Transitional Council (TNC) as the legitimate authority of the strife-torn north African country and urged the African Union to do the same.

The recent unfolding events in Libya have amply demonstrated that the National Transition Council is in the control of the greater part of Libya,” government spokesperson Dina Mufti told reporters.

Dina made the comments at a joint press briefing by Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and his Nigerian counterpart Olugbenga Ashiru, whose country recognized the rebels’ authority Tuesday. Continue reading
