Janse Van Rensburg of MTN-Qhubeka becomes the first foreigner to win the Yellow Jersey in the history of Tour of Eritrea

Stage 2 winner Van Rensburg also won the Red, Green and Yellow Jersey of the Tour of Eritrea

Following on from his teammate Jani Tewelde’s first stage win at the Tour of Eritrea on Wednesday 30 May, Jacques Janse van Rensburg ensured that the MTN-Qhubeka Team took another stage win as took first place on the podium after a hot and gruelling second stage from Massawa to Asmara.

The blazing hot conditions of stage one continued through to the second stage of the race, which was a 115km stretch that included a daunting 60km climb along Seydichi Pass.

“Jacques Janse Van Rensburg demonstrated again on today’s stage just why he must be one of this continent’s best climbers by ascending to victory on a brutal 60km climb,” says MTN-Qhubeka Team Manager Kevin Campbell. Continue reading

Jani Tewelde upsets Tour of Eritrea Yellow Jersey tradition

MTN-Qhubeka’s promising rider, Jani Tewelde has won the 89km long stage one competition of the Tour of Eritrea at a time of 2:25’42”. He comfortably took the lead in this UCI 2.2 rated race.

The win is also the first Yellow Jersey win for Jani Tewelde and his team. This phenomenon makes him the first foreign team player to win the Yellow Jersey, for the first time, in the history of the Tour of Eritrea.

UNITED NATIONS, December 2 — “No one will come” from Asmara to the UN in New York on Monday, Eritrea’s Permanent Representative Araya Desta told Inner City Press after 5 pm on Friday.

After a Security Council fight resulting in an eleventh hour invitation to President Isaias Afwerki to address the Council on Monday just before new sanctions on Eritrea are slated to be voted on, throughout Friday afternoon there was discussion that the US hadn’t come through with visas.

But by 5 pm the US bragged that 11 visas were being granted, for pick up Saturday morning.

This put the ball back in Eritrea’s court. Three times Isaias Afwerki had asked to address the Council before it votes on further sanctions. The request was ignored until Gabon and the United States on November 29 pushed for a vote on sanctions the next day. Continue reading

The 54-member bloc said Tuesday it is ready to support the NTC as it works to form an inclusive government.

Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, who holds the AU’s rotating chair, said the bloc supports the Libyan people as they build a “united, democratic, peaceful and prosperous Libya.” Continue reading
