The Eritrean runner threepeated on the men’s side in 59:34 but was over a minute short of his world record 58:23 despite going through 10k near record pace (27:44, 27:40 is the pace needed)

Another Lisbon win for Zersenay Tadese

Zesenay Tadese of Eritrea, got a big international win as he won the Lisbon Half Marathon today (25) in Portugal. He didn’t run under 59 minutes on Sunday (25) as in his previous appearances and crossed the finish line more than a minute off his World record (58:23) set in 2010, but still won handily in 59:34.

USA’s Shalane Flanagan won the women’s race in 1:08:52 at this IAAF Gold Label Road Race. Continue reading

Eritrean athlete Teklemariam Medhin displayed his excellence and domination at the 2nd CAA African Cross Country Championships that was held on Sunday (18) in Cape Town, South Africa, where athletes from 19 countries competed.

Teklemariam Medhin is one of the Eritreans that was expected to be a thorn in the flesh of team South Africa. Eritrea’s Zersenay Tadese (28:27) and Portugal’s Jessica Augusto (31:59) clinched respective victories at the 46th ‘San Silvestre Vallecana’ –  an IAAF Silver Label Road Race –  held in the Spanish capital on New Year’s Eve (31).

Tadese and Augusto suceeded in a very different ways. While the World Half Marathon record holder took advantage of Spain’s Ayad Lamdassem’s route mistake over the closing stages, the Portuguese European Cross Country champion became an overwhelming victor as she built a massive 55-second advantage on Spain’s European 1500m champion Nuria Fernández.

New Year’s eve night: Zersenay Tadese Vs Augusto in Madrid

The 46th ‘San Silvestre Vallecana’ –an IAAF Silver Label Road Race – will be held on New Year’s eve night. In addition to the elite contest, there will be a mass race held two and a half hours before the main event, where 35,000 will take to the streets of the Spanish capital.

The slightly downhill 10km race features Eritrea’s reigning World Half Marathon record holder Zersenay Tadese in the leading role. The 28-year-old Madrid-based star last raced at the IAAF World Half Marathon championships in Nanning on 16 October when he could not retain his title having to settle for the silver medal  behind Kenya’s Wilson Kiprop.                 Continue reading
